On-site Alternative Septic System Design
Gay and Neel, Inc. has been designing Alternative Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems for over ten years. Designs have ranged from small single-family systems to large public systems serving residential subdivisions, schools, and commercial applications. System designs have been installed and are operating throughout Virginia. Gay and Neel, Inc. has designed over one hundred fifteen septic systems in the past for sites where a conventional system was rejected. One example of an alternative residential system design is detailed below.

Treatment:

The system shown to the right utilizes a MicroFAST 0.5 Aerobic Treatment Unit to effectively treat the raw wastewater from a three bedroom, single-family residence. The system consists of three components: The media module that is placed in the baffled septic tank, the small regenerative blower (seen on the right in the picture), and the alarm box (seen beside the control panel for the disposal system on the left in the picture).

Disposal:

This lot required the design of a subsurface drip disposal system to disperse the treated effluent. A drip disposal system allows for shallow placement of the lines. This feature renders sites viable that were previously unsuitable. The system consists of four components: a drip disposal pump tank, a control panel (seen on the left of the picture), a filter/zoning headworks box (the green lid seen on the left of the picture below the control panel) and the dripline installed in the disposal area. The disposal area is in the background of the picture.
